Timo Werner is 23 years of age and one of the best strikers in the world. He's a player who has shown he can make an impact through the middle or as a winger who pushes into the penalty area. He will only get better. He has a £50M release clause.
He has, not surprisingly, been linked with Liverpool. Which is something that he was asked about today following Red Bull Leipzig's victory over Tottenham. And his response, well. We should maybe just stop talking just get to his response.
"Liverpool are the best team at the moment in the world," he said "To be linked with that team makes me very proud. It's a pleasure but I know Liverpool have a lot of good players and I know I have to learn more things to get on the level to play there."
It's worth pointing out that Werner, a German player in the Bundesliga, was answering, in English, a question posed in English by pundit Jan Aage Fjortoft. Which means there's all sorts of ways his answer might not mean what it sounds like it means.
It could easily be that he's simply saying that to play for a club like Liverpool—so a Liverpool or a Bayern Munich or a Madrid or Barcelona—he needs to get better as a player. Or it could mean he's just all but admitted he's set to join Liverpool.
We think it's still probably a touch early to rush out and buy a custom Liverpool Werner kit off a dodgy Chinese wholesale website, but certainly Werner's response isn't going to do anything to put a damper on his Liverpool transfer rumours.
